Autumn is quickly approaching and with it thoughts of cosy nights by the fire and meals made from seasonal produce. What better way to mark the end of summer and start harvest season off with a bang than by venturing outside the city for a breath of fresh air? SPHERE have rounded up the best pick your own farm experiences, all a commutable distance from central London, for flowers, foraging and a taste of life on the farm!

As thoughts of falling leaves start creeping in, these happy blooms will ensure the sun stays shining inside your home. These large flowers make a cheerful statement and by picking your own, you can ensure that they will elegantly fill even the deepest of your vases. When their sunny colours start fading, hang the blooms up to dry and you’ll have statement-making decor ready for when Autumn gets under full swing. Even the most dedicated fans of summer will be smiling at the promise of a big bunch of Kent’s finest towering flowers! 

If the cloudier skies have you feeling down, it’s a straightforward journey to a sunny escape. A little over an hour from London Bridge, take the Thameslink to Dartford then hop on the 429 towards West Kingsdown. Get off at Birchwood House and you’re just seconds from fulfilling your floral fantasies.

Pumpkin Picking at Tulley’s Farm, West Sussex

With over 1 million pumpkins produced this year and more than 100 varieties, there’s no shortage of choice to be had at Tulley’s Farm. On-site catering and, of course, plenty of pumpkin spice lattes to mark the occasion makes the West Sussex farm an ideal day out from central London.

Sat between London and Brighton, Tulley’s is an easy journey coming in at just over an hour. Take the Southern line from Victoria to Crawley, then take the 84 from outside the station towards East Grinstead. Tulley’s Farm has its own stop so you can’t miss it – step out and start stretching your muscles to ensure your doorstep boasts an impressive lantern this October.

Seasonal fruit is plentiful at Enfield and will ensure no snide remarks about your crumble-topped contribution to dinner. Parkside’s plentiful raspberry bushes and pending plums are well-worth mentioning as the perfect ingredients for a warming pudding, best enjoyed with a scoop of ice cream and a roaring fire.

Just an hour from King’s Cross, take the Great Northern line towards Cambridge, then get the 313 bus from Potter’s Bar to Roundhedge Way. It’s then only a 10 minute walk before you’ll find yourself surrounded by berries ripe for the picking.

Fancy a break from the spreadsheets and crosswords? Put those deductive skills to good use at Cookham Farm in Maidenhead where their Maize Maze will test your puzzle-solving abilities. There’s a set of clues to track down and you’ll receive a small prize if you solve the puzzle without opening the sealed map provided on entry. With marrows, gooseberries and red currants available to pick, you can mark your victory with a crop of fresh produce and a delicious meal at home.

Cookham Farm is the perfect destination if you’re in the mood for a crisp Autumn walk. Take the Elizabeth Line from Paddington to Langley, then it’s only a 25 minute stroll to Cookham farm where the Maiza Maze awaits.

Autumn Essentials at Garsons Farm, Surrey

Once, Garsons Farm was among the suppliers for London’s famous Borough Market. Now, it’s a wonderful trip outside the capital, supplying all your autumnal essentials. Cooking apples, cabbages, onions and broccoli are filling up Garsons’ farmland and just begging to be transformed into a warming dish. Take the train into Surrey soon for all you’ll need for classic cold-weather soups and stews.

Take the South Western railway from Waterloo to Walton-on-Thames, then get the 458 towards Kingston for 10 stops. After that, it’s just a 15 minute walk before you’ll be researching the best ratatouille to make the most of your autumn hoard.
