Dating back to 1680, Grantley Hall is as grand in its history as it is in its magnitude. Over the centuries, this Grade II* listed estate, now turned 5-star hotel, has welcomed politicians, artists, entertainers and royalty through its doors. Perched on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales, the quintessential British house crowns 38 acres of rolling grounds, with a grandiose fountain taking centre stage at the entrance.

Inside, sumptuous furnishings fit for a king – or queen – fill each room, from the mysterious book-lined library bar to the lofty ceilings dripping with twinkling chandeliers. But Grantley Hall isn’t only a feast for the eyes; the real star of the show is the dining.

Heading up the kitchen is Chef Patron Shaun Rankin, a leading light of modern British cooking since earning his first Michelin star in 2005. His eponymous restaurant at Grantley Hall followed suit just 18 months after opening. Part stately home, part gastronomic destination, it’s the kind of place that makes a single night feel like a proper escape. Read our full review of Grantley Hall here.

The Rooms

With 47 luxurious bedrooms and suites on offer, the decadence of downstairs travels up. Soft-toned walls set the scene for decorated headboards and lavish quilted throws and cushions, while sweeping drapes frame the views across the grounds. Each room carries the heritage and elegance that Grantley Hall so effortlessly embodies.

And bathrooms are an indulgence in their own right, finished in marble with heated floors underfoot and deep tubs made for a long, lazy soak, ideally with a glass of Krug Champagne in hand. But your room isn’t the only place to soak up the luxury: guests enjoy complimentary access to the Three Graces Spa, where the pool, sauna and Nordic Spa Garden await, with treatments available to book separately.

The Food and Drink

Chef Shaun Rankin’s namesake restaurant is a showcase for Yorkshire produce, with each ingredient locally sourced no more than 30 miles from the estate, and some even grown in Grantley Hall’s own Kitchen Garden or foraged by the team.

The result is his Taste of Home menu, a nostalgic journey through the region’s terroir told across 11 courses. Highlights range from duck liver parfait with bursts of blackberry, to a perfectly pink cut of grouse paired with deep, fruity sauces. Even the bread course is an event, with butter served three ways and a rich beef broth alongside it.

This meal is not one to miss, as the drinks are every bit as memorable as the food: as a Krug Ambassade, the restaurant’s sommelier takes guests on a global tour of fine wines and Champagne, each specifically chosen to complement the tasting menu.
