WIN a Stay in the Sky at PAN, Norway

Just an hour from Oslo and close to the Swedish border, Finnskogen forest stretches on for miles, a hushed world of spruce, birch and mirror-still lakes. Named after the Finnish settlers who arrived centuries ago, it is a landscape steeped in folklore and wildlife, where elk, bears and wolves roam to this day. Not to worry, though: no creature will be prowling past your door, as the cabins are suspended eight metres above the forest floor.

The Cabins 

From the ground, the cabins look like something straight out of a storybook: dark, angular silhouettes peek out above the pines. Reaching your cabin is half the adventure in itself, as a black spiral staircase coils up through the branches, with the ground falling further away with each step. Once inside, the wild gives way to warmth. Wood-lined walls, where the rings of the trees can still be traced in the grain, wrap around a snug living space with a fireplace asking to be lit. Towering windows stretch the full height of the wall, so you are living in the sky, with only the birds for neighbours. Upstairs, the bed is tucked away in an alcove, the perfect place to drift off to the hush of the forest.

Mornings can begin slowly, with a basket of homemade breakfast delivered to your cabin, best enjoyed by the window as the forest wakes up. From there, the day is yours to wander. Pull on your boots and follow the trails deep into the woods, or hop on a bike and loop around the lake.

For the more adventurous, the nearby rivers can be explored by canoe, their rapids ranging from gentle ripples to something a little livelier. Keep your eyes peeled too, as the forest is full of residents. With busy beavers by the water and countless bird species flying overhead, there is plenty for wildlife lovers to spot. As darkness falls, sink into the hot tub and gaze up at the stars and, if you’re lucky, the northern lights might just be looking back at you.
