Cedric Grolet is arguably the internet’s most famous baker. One look at his Instagram page, full of aesthetically uniform and soothing videos showcasing the process behind his creations, and it’s easy to see why he has over 14 million followers. First making his mark on the pastry world at the prestigious Le Meurice Palace, Cedric Grolet makes viennoiserie look like the true art it is.

Londoners rejoice as Cedric’s pâtisserie has landed at The Berkeley – his first venture outside of Paris. Here you can pair trompe-l'œil signatures and sharing cakes with richly roasted coffee in the iconic hotel’s elegant surroundings. Mahali & Co’s ethos is simple – diversify London’s bakery scene by reflecting its growing multicultural community through pastry. Set up by Miguel Jocson and Ru-Yan Foong, self-described “citizens of the world” – who grew up in the Philippines and Shanghai, respectively – there’s a South-East Asian influence, seen with products like milk bread and sesame madeleines, however, no corner of the world goes unexplored. Be it curry puff trays or pumpkin pie choux, it’s absolutely the place to go to try something new.

Mahali & Co can be found on Battersea Park Road.

For Community Vibes – e5 Bakehouse

E5 Bakehouse dubs itself as “rooted in community” – the name itself is a nod to the Bakehouse’s former postcode. Everything it does is set up to serve the community, beyond, of course, the delicious bakes: it has collaborated with the Just Bread refugee training programme, uses wheat exclusively from the regenerative Fellows Farm (owned by the Bakehouse) and is a certified organic business by the Soil Association.

The cakes and pastries are absolutely delicious, with the “perfect croissant” executed flawlessly – a flaky golden exterior housing a light, fluffy honeycomb structure inside. But it’s the savouries that caught our attention, in particular the classic carrot and feta pie that recently returned to the counter.

For the Perfect Pistachio Croissant – Astrid Bakery

When SPHERE asked Astrid Bakery owner Charlotte O’Kelly what people travel to her Muswell Hill store for, she admitted it was for the pistachio croissant. It uses all high-end ingredients, including the highest-possible quality pistachios, which are roughly ground into the pistachio cream piped through the middle of the croissant.

As a former fashion journalist, Charlotte has a real eye for aesthetics, so everything in the store has been beautifully designed – be it the sage walls, checkerboard floors, or the dainty shelves of rolls, scrolls, buns and cakes. Certainly one to add to your North London bakery bucket list.

Astrid Bakery can be found at 118A & 114 Alexandra Park Rd, N10 2AH.

For Retro Classics – Claridge’s Bakery

Tucked away on Brook’s Mews, Claridge’s Bakery is a love letter to nostalgic British bakes. Guided by celebrated baker Richard Hart, the menu is designed to evoke happy childhood memories – finger rolls, jammy dodgers, Bakewell tarts, and a cheese and marmite straw that’ll knock your socks off all feature.

There’s also a Claridge’s take on the meal deal – the Mayfair meal deal if you will – which pairs a signature sandwich with a sweet treat and drink of your choice. It’s the perfect grab-and-go meal if you find yourself shopping in the West End.

Forno Bakery is Hackney’s answer to freshly baked Italian goods. Born during the pandemic after the unfortunate closing of their restaurant Ombra, Forno is the place to visit for Italian classics like focaccia or panettonne, among many other pastries. They also serve fresh pasta and pizza in teglia romana (meaning the pizza is baked within a pan). Sit back and relax by watching the production of the produce unfold in their bright, open space, and maybe try out their delicious maritozzi (a romana special: brioche bun filled with cream).
