There’s something special about coming in from the slopes to a place that’s entirely your own. No crowded lobbies or queues for the spa, just a roaring fire, a drink poured before you’ve even sat down and a team taking care of the rest. Across Europe, this season’s most coveted chalets are redefining what a ski holiday can be. Some have collected industry accolades for their service and design, others come with family histories stretching back generations, and a few with surprises you’d never expect to find at altitude. Be it private bowling alleys or karaoke with a view, gathering a group in the mountains has never been more desirable.  These are the chalets worth booking this winter, and what makes each one stand out from the rest.

Chalet The Barn, Lech

Nestled in the heart of Lech, Austria, The Barn spreads across more than 1,000 square metres and four levels, with seven ensuite bedrooms sleeping 14 guests. Opt for the catered package and a private chef will serve gourmet dinners in the generous dining room, while a 24/7 butler service takes care of your every request. Afterwards, take your drinks out to the terrace and warm your hands by the fire pit as the peaks around Oberlech sparkle in the night. And if the evenings still need livening up, the entertainment suite delivers. Fit with its own snooker table, cinema and bar, boredom simply isn’t an option.

Why you should stay here: A round-the-clock butler means any whims get answered, whether it’s a nightcap at 2am or a hot chocolate waiting when you’re back from the slopes.

Chalet Raffort III, Méribel

Just steps from the slopes, with ski-in, ski-out access, Chalet Raffort III strikes the perfect balance between traditional French chalet and modern design. Warm wood, rich leather and natural metal finishes give it an industrial edge, while the open fireplace at the heart of the living room makes for a dramatic yet cosy centrepiece. Six ensuite bedrooms sleep up to 12, and a chauffeur and butler are on hand throughout your stay. After a day on the mountaintops, unwind in the sauna (no strangers allowed), followed by a massage in the treatment room. And then sink into a jacuzzi so vast it could pass for a pool.

Why you should stay here: Ski all day across the world’s biggest connected ski domain, then come home to a south-facing terrace that catches the last of the afternoon sun.

Book your stay at amaselections.com, from €5,530–30,485 per week

Chalet Marmottière, Verbier

Linked by an outdoor walkway and a shared garage, Chalet Marmottière is two chalets in one. Sleeping 18 across nine bedrooms, it is only minutes from the Savoleyres and Médran lifts. It was named World’s Best New Chalet in 2020, and it’s no surprise when you see its design and facilities. Blending rough timber beams and vintage leather armchairs with polished chrome and hidden tech, it marries old-world character with contemporary comfort. The main chalet’s ground floor is a playground for kids and adults alike, with a 17m glass-framed pool, a sunken hot tub facing the peaks, a bowling alley, a spa and a poker room overlooking the wine cellar. And the second chalet is home to the 3D cinema room. Add Verbier’s famously lively après scene, and there are few better places in the Alps to throw a party.

Why you should stay here: Après-ski rarely gets better than a round at your own private bowling alley. Though, after a few too many at Le Farinet, a strike may be wishful thinking.

Book this chalet for yourself at hautemontagne.com. Prices start from CHF 208,770–500,850 per week.

Chalet Chesa el Toula, St. Moritz

Built by the owner’s grandfather and still in the family two generations later, this 900 square metre chalet in St. Moritz’s exclusive Suvretta area has been beautifully renovated across five floors. Italian stone, designer furnishings and one-off pieces gathered from around the globe give it a rich, timeless feel. It’s also one of the few chalets in the resort with its own pool, alongside both indoor and outdoor hot tubs and a hammam for post-ski recovery. Across the six available ensuite bedrooms, there is plenty of space for adults and kids alike to enjoy themselves, with a private gym, cinema room and games room as highlights.

Why you should stay here: Sample something rare from the wine cave, then let the chalet manager drive you into town in a Heritage Land Rover Defender to continue the night out.

Chalet Les Anges, Zermatt

Les Anges took the World Ski Awards’ top chalet title three years in a row from 2017-19, thanks to a combination few can match: Matterhorn views from nearly every room, warm reclaimed-wood interiors and seamless service. This seven-bedroom chalet truly embodies what it is named after: angelic. Each bedroom is named after an angel or celestial being, and with plush bedding and soft furnishings throughout, you’ll feel as though you’re sleeping on clouds. Soaring vaulted ceilings crown the open-plan living space, where sumptuous sofas gather around the fireplace and a grand piano takes pride of place. Downstairs is home to the ultimate spa trifecta: treatment room, sauna and hammam, finished with a rainfall shower and japanese garden for total relaxation.

Why you should stay here: Ski across the border for a long Italian lunch in Cervinia, then glide back to Switzerland in time for après.

Find out more via elysiancollection.com, starts at CHF 60,000 per week.

Chalet Corniche Noire, Les Gets

True to its name, Chalet Corniche Noire does dark and dramatic beautifully. The Grace Space has dressed its seven bedrooms and living spaces in inky black, rich stone and warm timber, so the chalet feels sleek by day and wonderfully snug by night. It’s a hit with families, too. The pool runs from indoors out onto the terrace, and its adjustable depth means even toddlers can splash about safely. Outside, a hot tub and outdoor kitchen keep the party going long after sunset, while a chalet team, private chef and two chauffeurs make every day feel effortless.

Why you should stay here: Where else could you belt out karaoke at nearly 4,000 feet?

Find out for yourself at consensiochalets.co.uk. Priced at €37,000 per week.

Chalet Lena, St Anton

Design sits at the core of Chalet Lena. Across nine bedrooms, decadent furnishings create an atmosphere that is pure indulgence. In the living room, an almost futuristic fireplace takes centre stage, while natural materials and sumptuous curtains frame the views beyond, putting this chalet in a class of its own. The real showstopper, though, is the pool. Beginning indoors before gliding out into the open air, there is nothing but the mountains ahead of you. With a private chef cooking four-course dinners each night, chalet staff making sure everything runs smoothly and chauffeur to take you wherever your heart desires, all that’s left to do is sit back, relax and enjoy.

Why you should stay here: To swim straight out towards the mountains in an indoor-outdoor pool like no other.

Book this chalet via firefly-collection.com, where prices start from €44,000 to €136,000 per week.

Chalet Vilaiet, Ortisei Val Gardena

With only the Dolomites for company, each of the 3-ensuite bedrooms open straight onto both the garden and pool, so you can roll out of bed and into a morning swim with the most spectacular views. The pool, however, isn’t the only wellness facilities on offer, in fact, there is a Finnish sauna, steam room, aqua moon waterfall and even a snow shower if you haven’t had enough of it already outside. The open-plan living room leads on to the dining space, where, if you choose the catered option, the chef serves home-cooked dinners each night using produce sourced from local suppliers and the very fields surrounding the chalet. It doesn’t get much fresher than that.

Why you should stay here: Ski with world champion and chalet owner Isolde Kostner, or toast the week with South Tyrol’s finest wines (both on offer with a seven-night stay), and then thaw out in the Finnish sauna.

Stay in this chalet via vilaiet.it. Prices start from €31,700 per week.

Chalet des Légendes, Val d’Isère

Hidden away in a corner of Val d’Isère, this 5-bedroom chalet brings peace, tranquility and privacy to the ski season. While still being only minutes from the slopes and wider ski areas, it maintains this sense of privacy with unparalleled views of the mountains. A modern and contemporary twist on the usual chalet-design still pays homage to the town’s heritage. It’s a space designed for slow evenings and lazy afternoons spent by the pool. Picture soaking up the warmth in the hammam after a day on the slopes, then wander through to the dining room for pre-dinner nibbles before your private chef serves a three-course feast. All the while, Perrier-Jouët Champagne and local wines flow freely.

Why you should stay here: Watch skiers tackle La Face from the sofa, the slope that shaped the Olympic legends behind the chalet’s name, then decide if you’re brave enough to follow.

Find out more via consensiochalets.co.uk, price starts from €29,000 per week.
